You may or may not be aware that standard paints emit solvents into the air during the curing and evaporation process, and as you’ll likely be able to suppose, this isn’t a positive thing. VOCs, which are Volatile Organic Compounds, are getting into the Earth’s atmosphere. This can have several ill effects; for one, it can result in the ozone to deplete, it can add to the problem of smog and also the big one; it can add towards global warming.
Global warming concerns mean that people are trying to find more options in their choice of paints. During the 1990s, when we were introduced the first eco friendly paints, they failed to take off.
As the public are now becoming aware of the environmental concerns, will environmentally friendly paints be more sought after? But, there’s one more issue to deal with: the painting experts. The painting masters keep on on saying paints that don’t contain the volatile organic compounds aren’t as good as paints that do contain them, even if the sellers are claiming the opposite.
These experts also say that these Earth friendly paints also need additional coats to get the same finish as normal paints, and that they don’t last as long. The paint industry has to think about the health concerns relating to VOCs, including breathing problems like asthma and that consumers are going for eco friendly paints.
Water based latex paints having binding qualities can be a way to deal with this problem. They are believed to be eco friendly and being water based don’t have VCOs. Still, as with nearly everything, there is a drawback: latex paints can’t be used to paint on iron since they’re water based, which ends up making the iron become rusty much more quickly. No matter the issue, latex paints are becoming increasingly popular with consumers.
How paint is prepared and where it comes from, all defines if the paint is eco friendly. For example, something that has properties to hide other paints is called Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide is made through a couple of processes that result in weak sulfuric acid being produced. The manner in which the acid is discarded is environmentally harmful because the sea is its ultimate destination.
Another issue with Titanium Dioxide is that it is reactive to the sun, resulting in smog, when utilized as an outside coat. A carcinogen that could lead to cancer likewise has implications with Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide continues to be found in paints even though all of this evidence.
Earth friendly paints can be expected to become widely used as we start to understand the damaging effects that everyday paints have on our health and in our environment.
