Manufacturing techniques today are capable of milling large panels, from one sheet with lessened seams, caulking, as well as less expansion and contraction of cracks that has plagued traditional building. Wainscoting may also refer to additional materials utilised in a similar approach.

The original principle of wainscoting was to cover the lower part of walls which, in homes constructed with poor or else nonexistent damp-proof courses, tend to be plagued by rising dampness. Its intention has become decorative.

Changes in buildings and taste, and in the economics of building, these features had just about totally disappeared.Lower level walls look rather plain also empty, and are unprotected.Applying wainscoting and chair rails to your lower walls can dress up a room together with a variety of textures, lines, and colors, while shielding the walls as well.

Wainscoting and chair rails has yet again, become fashionable in todays modern-day interior decoration.

The height on the wainscoting, capped with a chair rail is often somewhere from 30″ to 36″higher than the floor, where you establish this line will depend on room demensions, the heights on the ceiling and window sills.

There are 2 choices intended for wainscoting materials:individual,solid-wood boards,or laminated-wood sheet product.

1″by 4″ tongue-and-groove,bead boards-provide an informal, country look, widespread during the late 19th-and early 20th-century farmhouses. The best means to install it entails a good deal of labor, but the conclusion can be a built-in,great look for the completed product.

You’ll have to cut and remove the wallboard in the region to be covered, let in 1″by4″ nailers across the studs, put in the vertical wainscoting, and cap it using the chair rail.Take off Door and casement casings, baseboards, and anything that could interfere with the elimination on the wallboard.

Establishing a level line for your chair rail is very important, and if you intend to install in more than one place, measure from your ceiling,as floor levels might differ dependant upon floor coverings along with sub-flooring.

Once the wall-board is detached, snap lines over the uncovered studs and cut notches 3/4″deep for your 2″by4″nailers top and middle. The sole plate will serve as the foot nailer.

The sheet products are usually mounted in a faster, more economical, and much less messy tactic by merely gluing in addition to tacking over the wallboard, using construction bonding agent in addition to 1 1/2″ finish nails.

  1. I don't think it is totally necessary to remove the drywall and add backing. That seems like a lot of extra work that can be avoided by using a stud finder and making sure when you nail on the chair rail, you nail on each stud. Just my opinion… I always look for the path of least resistance….
